SAMe How to Slow Down Your Age Clock

The "lubricant" for the clock is SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine).

Have you ever encountered such a situation: two people of the same age, one of whom looks energetic and has tight skin, while the other appears tired and aged, and is in a declining state?

Perhaps you have heard of the term "epigenetics". It sounds very sophisticated, but in fact, it's quite simple.

DNA methylation can be understood as "chemical notes" attached to genes - when these notes are attached, the genes are "silenced".

When people are young, they keep their doorknobs and switches in good order, turning them on and off as needed.

As one gets older, they tend to throw away most of the post-it notes, but in some cases, they end up sticking them on more places than necessary.

The result is that "what should be turned off is not turned off (inflammation, genes related to aging are improperly activated), and what should be turned on is wrongly turned off (repair, metabolic genes fail to function properly)", and the body thus appears aged.

This is what is known as the "epigenetic clock" - by measuring the methylation status at specific locations on the DNA, scientists can calculate a person's "biological age", and this figure may differ by several decades from the age indicated on your ID card.

The bad news is that research has found that around the age of 35, the methylation status in the blood begins to undergo significant changes, and the degree of disorder starts to increase - this is the molecular-level reason why many people feel that "after 35, their bodies suddenly stop functioning properly".

Moreover, women in general are more deficient than men because the female body's estrogen is metabolized and excreted, requiring more methyl groups.

Of course, at 35 years old, it might just be a feeling.

The body won't have much trouble due to this yet. But by the time one reaches 50, the body will be much more sensitive to the "insufficient methyl donors", and the nutritional gap will be magnified into epigenetic damage at this point.

The good news is that this clock doesn't just keep ticking upwards; nutrition, lifestyle, and specific interventions can all slow down the clock.

SAMe is the most crucial "methyl courier" in your body.

1. Stress hormone: Adrenaline

When feeling stressed, anxious or rushing to finish work, the body will secrete cortisol and adrenaline.

If these people lack methyl donors (such as SAMe, folic acid, B12, and betaine), the metabolism of estrogen will be even more blocked, leading to symptoms such as premenstrual irritability and breast hyperplasia.

Dopamine and norepinephrine (responsible for happiness and concentration) - their "cleanup after work" also requires COMT + SAMe.

Therefore, a deficiency in SAMe can also affect your emotional stability and concentration.

Melatonin (regulates sleep) - From serotonin to melatonin, the final step also requires SAMe to provide a methyl group.

Therefore, people with poor methylation status may also experience a decline in sleep quality.

For patients with alcoholic liver disease, fatty liver disease, and drug-induced liver injury, SAMe is a commonly used adjunctive treatment method in clinical practice.

2. Emotions - Supporting Role

SAMe can help the brain synthesize more "happy neurotransmitters" (dopamine, norepinephrine), thus having a certain antidepressant effect.

Multiple studies have found that 800-1600 milligrams of SAMe per day, whether used alone or in combination with antidepressants, can improve depressive symptoms.

But to be honest: Currently, the mainstream international guidelines do not consider SAMe as the first-line treatment for depression.

How to choose right SAMe supplement on market?

The molecule SAMe is particularly "sensitive" - it is afraid of heat, moisture and stomach acid.

Therefore, for the same amount of capsules, the effects of different brands can vary by several times.

When making a purchase, focus on three key points:

1. Look at proportion of "(S,S)-SAMe"

SAMe exists in two forms. Only one form (S,S form) is active, while the other form (R,S form) is waste.

During storage, the active substances will gradually transform into inactive ones.

The standard set by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is: the active form should be no less than 60%.

Top brands can achieve: a production level of no less than 75%, and this level must remain above 75% throughout the entire warranty period.

If a product does not indicate this ratio, or if its price is extremely low, it is very likely that most of it is already "waste".

2. Check if it is a "enteric-coated tablet"

Because SAMe will decompose in gastric acid, good products will definitely be made into enteric-coated tablets.

This way, the tablets can safely pass through the stomach and only release and be absorbed in the small intestine.

If the product does not have the label "enteric-coated", you can generally skip it.
