After drinking alcohol, should one take milk thistle or glutathione?

The Spring Festival is approaching, and drinking is inevitable. Everyone will discuss how to take care of the liver.

I did some research on glutathione a couple of days ago and showed it to my friend.

The conversation began. The friend said, "I've been taking milk thistle for a while. I'm curious to know what the difference is between milk thistle and glutathione."

After the research and communication are completed, some conclusive remarks will be shared.

Let's pour a bucket of cold water on this: There is no "alcohol detoxifying medicine"

Before comparing the two, it is necessary to dispel a misconception: no liver-protecting ingredients can be regarded as "alcohol antidotes" or "bulletproof suits" for drinking alcohol.

Dandelion has a slow onset of effect and cannot be used as a temporary "savior"; glutathione is used to deal with the damage that has already occurred, rather than as a preventive barrier.

The most effective liver protection plan is always: limit alcohol intake, avoid fasting, drink plenty of water, and give the liver some rest time.

After understanding this, let's look at the two components. They are more like "repair plans" tailored for different "damage scenarios".

Liver protection principle:

Dandelion: Focuses on "rebuilding the barrier", being the "repairer of liver cell membranes", suitable for long-term maintenance of chronic and mild liver damage.

Glutathione - "antioxidant" that human body naturally possesses

Source: Endogenous tripeptide compounds in the human body (composed of glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine), the liver is the main synthesis organ.

Reduced glutathione (GSH) - active, directly involved in detoxification

Oxidized glutathione (GSSG) - loses activity after oxidation

Dose effect: The low-dose group (< 400mg/day) showed significantly better results than the high-dose group.

Group using vancomycin alone: Renal function indicators (creatinine, urea nitrogen) significantly increased

Group using vancomycin + glutathione: Renal function indicators significantly improved

Dandelion: Mainly for "liver"

For patients with kidney problems, glutathione might actually be a "protective umbrella"

After understanding the principle, specific problems become clear:

Daily maintenance and chronic conditioning (such as long-term staying up late, mild fatty liver): Water vetch is the priority choice.

Studies have confirmed that it is beneficial for improving liver function indicators in such situations, and as a dietary supplement, it is more suitable for long-term use.

Dealing with acute injuries (such as acute elevation of transaminase caused by drugs or heavy alcohol consumption): This is the battlefield of glutathione.
